For over 20 years, Washoe County has received it's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ambulance transport from the Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority (REMSA). While originally well intentioned, and arguably appropriate in 1986, REMSA is no longer the best model for providing EMS to our community.
To set the record straight from the beginning, this site isn't meant to disparage the Paramedics and EMT's who provide the service. However, this site is designed to draw attention to the unethical efforts that the REMSA Board and management staff have engaged in to protect their lucrative empire.
In fact, we don't even believe that REMSA provides poor care to its patients. The people caring for people have their best interests in mind. We're sure there's room for improvement, but that's not the focus here. We even propose that all of the REMSA employees be guaranteed continued employment as this County reforms the system. The real issues are whether or not ambulance service can be done better, and more efficiently for the people of Washoe County. The ultimate goal here is to demand transparency from REMSA and disclose any documents that are needed to ensure that we have the best system possible for our residents. If REMSA is actually providing as great a system as they claim they are, then there shouldn't be any problem with opening their books, re-evaluating their system, and even completing a competitve bid for service.
Did you know that REMSA's franchise agreement required that documents be public record up until a few years ago when that provision was removed? Why would you go to the effort of removing this public record provision if you didn't have something to hide? A better question is who allowed this to happen? Could it be that REMSA has some pretty close friends that control this process?
